Getting Gamers
16 - Uravelled 2 (Game Suggestion)
Couch co-op experience is sadly something that gamers don’t get much anymore with all the online games that we now have. But there are still a few good recent games that still offer it like Unravel 2. So why don’t you have a seat and listen to our experience of this game together. It might also be the game that will nudge your significant other to try gaming!
Hello humans and welcome to getting gamers your guide to understanding the gamers in your life. I'm Juke My pronouns are they them..
Perf:And I am Perf. My pronouns are he him.
Juke:And today we have a game suggestion. For beginners, it's a co op game. So a gamer can play with a noob to try to get them into gaming and we really found that it was a great a great beginner game.
Perf:And it's somewhat of a dying breed because there's not much co-op couch games anymore. Yeah. And the gaming industry's because pretty much everything is online or solo, solo, single player offline. So when we find some new gems that you can play a couch co-op, we will most likely suggest them.
Juke:Yeah, so we're probably gonna have segments like this coming up. Once in a while just good game suggestions for beginners, especially for gamers and beginners together. But before we get into that, let's talk about what games we've been playing this week. For me, the answer is always Hearthstone. That's pretty much the only game I play regularly and the tournament has just another friendly tournament has just started. But perf you've been playing a game that you've haven't played in a long time.
Perf:Yeah, I've been, I gotta say, I've been a pirate, but it was needed. It was needed because the game I downloaded from my childhood is from 2006 I think and it's not something you can find anymore on in stores, or I think you can find some very rare copies of that the range between 100 and 150 bucks. So, yeah, it's
Juke:it's not like top notch quality either. So 150 bucks for a game that's like 2008 quality is something
Perf:We can say it's artifact. But yeah, so I've downloaded this game and it's called the battle for middle earth 2 so if there's any Lord of the Rings fans out there. It's a it's a RTS based on the lore of Lord of the rings. Nice. So yeah, I've been having pretty much I've been having fun, nostalgic fun. Yeah.
Juke:It definitely has a Lord of the ring vibes to the aesthetic. Like the elf, I saw briefly really had the face of a Lord of the Rings elf like dos narrows skinny faces.
Perf:Yeah, it's the graphics are pretty old, of course. But it's it's still it's still a beautiful game for an RTS of that time
Juke:Yeah, it definitely looks better than Warcraft in my opinion. Yeah, like, yeah,
Perf:it's better than Warcraft it's, I think it's two or three years. It's three years. Warcraft is three years older.
Juke:Okay, and when I say for the gamers at home before you rage against me when I say it looks better. I mean, aesthetically, I have not played the game. I am not judging the gameplay of Warcraft against this game. I mean, the visuals do not come for me.
Perf:Perfect protection skills my love
Juke:My shields are up
Perf:a big debate about which game is better. But I'm pretty sure Warcraft is a better game...
Juke:But it's ugly, I think I'M gonna make some enemies online.
Perf:You're gonna make a bunch of enemies. That's not tell that to Grubby.
Juke:I love Grubby though and I love watching it. I've loved watching it. I just don't think it's a very pretty game.
Perf:Of course, it's very old and they tried to make it look better. But
Juke:yeah, but nobody will. Yeah, because it's slower. Right?
Perf:The, the remodelling of all the graphic aspects are causing many many bugs and delays and the hitbox Oh, that's that's someone I can define here. What's a hitbox? Yeah, hitbox is a trough all games. It's the actual space that your characters taking in the game. In which if you hit him at certain parts is gonna it's gonna hit him for real and sometimes depending on the model of the character. And let's say it's a super big character he's gonna have the same books of depending on the game, he can have bigger hitbox or the same hitbox If he has the same hitbox, you can hit hit him in the, let's say, the the extremities are going to be non existent from the hitbox. Let's say you fire you shoot the guy in the arm, he won't hit the elbow, it's not actually going to hit him. But if the hitbox represents the actual model of the character, if you hit him in the arm, it's gonna hit.
Juke:Okay, and so the problem with the Warcraft three model is that you can try to hit something and it doesn't hit
Perf:sometimes, and sometimes just taking the orders you give your units with, with the clicking is not gonna be processed well enough. Okay. So there's a lot of very micro bugs that can affect your performance in a competitive way. That makes it so that everyone's using the old graphics. I think they've been working on that lately, but as tilting it's not perfect because I don't see any pros playing with the new graphics. Yeah. But other than that, I've been re downloading a game that I'm going to play again with Zik and Divi. Third Person Shooter. That's a ghost recon Wildlands.
Juke:Ghost Recon Wildlands. So wildlands like Ghost Recon. I mean, I'm guessing there are several Ghost Recon. Okay.
Perf:It dates back to the first Xbox. Oh, okay. Well, so yeah, well, that was 10-11 years old.
Juke:Oh, yeah. Okay. Interesting. So, Xbox.
Perf:It's a Tom Tom Clancy's games. Oh, I know that name. He's a he's a writer. Oh, he has many books.
Juke:Okay. Okay. Like what?
Perf:I don't know. The name I know his games, but I don't know his. His writings, his books. But I'm pretty sure it's all..
Juke:like sci fi type
Perf:No..what to say? Polier?
Juke:Investigative type stuff.
Perf:Yeah, pretty much. Pretty sure it's in military dash cop being books. Interesting. Sorry, guys. I'm liking the word for policier, which is books about investigations. And yeah, the you should know that
Juke:books, you know, . Words. Okay, words.
Perf:It's complicated.
Juke:So going back to our topic of this episode, we have a suggestion for beginners that want to play. It's a co op game. So you need to be two people to play this game. And ideally, you need to be two people sitting in a couch together and having fun. And the game is called
Perf:unravel 2. Because I think that unravel one isn't another co-op game.
Juke:Okay, so definitely go for unravel. Two, because that's what we're talking about. And the second version is always better. I'm saying that but that's not not always true. But whatever. Unravel 2 to your like, each your little character in your tiny little things made of yarn, basically. And you're going through a map, so it's 2d, right? Kind of like Mario bro is a lot of a lot of the platformer games that that our generation grew up with were 2d. And you're both your little characters are tied by a string together and you're constantly tied by you're constantly attached to one another, by the string Perf smiling because I keep making signs with my hands trying to describe it. I know you guys can't see me, but it helps me describe what I'm saying. But the reason this game is so good for a beginner to play, especially if you want to you like if your gamer wants to play a game with you. It's a puzzle game. So there's platforming, there's jumping, but there's also some solving things where you use the fact that you're tied to each other.
Perf:You use the tension to make certain type of jobs or swinging.
Juke:Yeah. But when things are too hard, and you don't need to be swinging one another. You can attach yourself to Yeah, and you can piggyback. So if there's certain areas that are too hard, which happened to me, I had to just piggyback and then Perf did the whole, like that small area, because I just kept dying and then we both have to restart every time I kept dying. So at some point, I just piggybacked on him because I was getting frustrated, which is a nice part of this game is that if you're at this point where you're getting frustrated, you can say Okay, fuck it, I don't want to. We're not here to live negative emotions. We're here to play a casual thing. We're not here to practice and make you into a gamer. We're just here to play a casual thing. So piggyback get past the hard part. And then we continue.
Perf:Hop on, babe. You're the one going in my back this time. And it
Juke:wasn't we laughed like crazy at some point. And there was more stressful points where we were getting chased. So it's not super casual, where you're bored like I would for me as a beginner. You know, it was, I was constantly playing and working, but for a gamer. Like, like you. Were you ever bored? Not necessarily because of the company, but because of the game?
Perf:No, no, it's a pretty entertaining game. The puzzles are progressively harder, which makes sense, but it's very fun. Because sometime you you're faster than me to with the puzzles.
Juke:Yeah, well, that's the fun part. Because it's puzzles. And it's 2d. It's not necessarily puzzles. Like if I say puzzles and gaming together for a beginner, that might sound intimidating. But the puzzle, it has really nothing to do with gaming necessarily, it's not a shooting puzzle, it's not a it's really like, Okay, I got to how do I place these things so that we can make a bridge, you know, kind of so it happened that me the beginner solved it before. Perfect, because it's not necessarily a gaming thing. It's really more of a solve this problem thing, you know, and I have an ADHD mind, I'm better with patterns and stuff like that. So sometimes my brain caught on faster, and it was a satisfying thing to be like, hey, like, I'm not just piggybacking my way through this whole game, I'm actually solving things. And, and it's fun as a beginner because sometimes your gamer needs you. There's parts of the game where even though this guy is a pro gamer, he cannot pass this area if you're not there to help them swing.
Perf:Exactly. And that's what's making very fun about their Co Op game which you actually have to cooperate with you.
Juke:Yeah, and but we had a lot of fun. We haven't finished the game yet. I don't know how many levels there are to it.
Perf:I think we are a quarter or a third done at max because we had to start over
Juke:Yeah.
Perf:In your defense days was the controller controller the joystick issue? Yeah, it was kind of stuck. always moving.
Juke:Yeah, I accidentally restarted the game. So we had to restart it.
Perf:Yeah, it overwrote the save we had Yeah,
Juke:but that was my mistake. So beginners, don't be afraid of that your gamer will take care of starting the game for you.
Perf:But we got to keep doing it. Because yeah, We catched up.
Juke:Yeah, we did we we caught up and went I gotta have something. Oh, yeah, there's not really much of a story to the game. The focus is really you your two little yarn characters that are smaller than the real world world. I'll say that the physical like the the map the stuff you're jumping over and whatnot. Those are real world things. So there'll be a table and a chair like it's not it's not like from a sci fi world. It's not
Perf:a fantasy world. Yeah. It looks like there is somewhat of a story behind with the but it's the ghost the Yeah, some things happen, but it's very unclear what's happening.
Juke:Yeah. And I feel like maybe as we progress through the game, we might understand what's what's going on there. But but definitely the story has nothing to do with our gameplay. There's nothing to read or there's no story to follow into have to remember to succeed properly. It's really just jumping over things platform is
Perf:It's clearly puzzle focus.
Juke:Yeah, the same way, we never really knew that there was much of a story to Mario Bros. Because you don't need to really know the story to complete the games. So it's in that aspect. And but it was it's really fun. The whole having to solve okay, how do we get there clearly, we have to swing. But okay, now whenever I swing, I'm hitting this part. So I have to I have to crawl up my rope. That's all that's a great part to whenever I fall. As long as Perf didn't fall, I can crawl up my rope and get back to where he is. Exactly, which is an amazing thing because within platformers I think any beginner was played any platform maybe even if you played Mario Bros once you've fallen in and it's so fucking annoying. It's
Perf:like an integrated failsafe.
Juke:Exactly.
Perf:You're a newbie.
Juke:I've never I don't know have you played with Divi because I know Divi is the one that found it.
Perf:No. At first we it was a game that we wanted to do. Right after what's it
Juke:It takes two it takes to them. I was not
Perf:but we found out that it was only a couch Co Op game. It was. It wasn't an online co-op game.
Juke:Yeah, cuz I Yeah, true. You can't really play online. Interesting. Very true.
Perf:Yeah, we got we got fooled. But it's perfect because it gave us the opportunity to have this game that we played together. Yeah.
Juke:And because I was gonna say, I don't know how hard it would really be for two gamers. I feel like it would be pretty straightforward. Like, what, what, but it would be a fun thing of like, oh, like, bam, bam, we're good at this type thing.
Perf:I don't think you would be very much faster with Divi because the the biggest part is the puzzling. So yeah, . But I
Juke:do have to restart certain things a few times. And then it's happened a few times. I tried four or five times. And then I'm like fucking piggybacking versus with two gamers. You get through those pretty fast, I'm assuming.
Perf:Yeah, it would be a bit faster for sure. But maybe just the fact that Divi has more experience with gaming puzzles. But,
Juke:but I wouldn't use so you wouldn't say that. Playing this game with two gamers would be boring. You would still find it enjoyable?
Perf:Yeah, faster, but it would be enjoyable still.
Juke:Yeah. But definitely, I really think it's a good a good game to get your beginner, your newb like, I'm talking to you gamers out there, grab your noob and try to stop because first of all, they're cute little yarn, guys. So if you're newb is your girlfriend or anyone who appreciates cuteness. And to be honest, if someone in your life doesn't appreciate cuteness, like what's wrong with them, but like, it's fun, because you like this little tiny yarn character. So they're cute. And you're like, Okay, you know, this is a little cute aspect of the character. So it's easy to like, be like, Oh, yay, fun. And then you sit down, the game's not too hard. You can take your time, there's no real timer or time limit to it. There's a bunch of fail safes had I played that years and years ago would have been a great entry level game for me to start appreciating platformers. And then slowly, because I do think platformers are one of the easier beginner games to like, get someone into gaming and appreciating. appreciating the fun of completing a level and that feeling of completing a level and stuff like that, and having the help and the failsafes I really, I cannot think of a better beginner game,
Perf:I think is one of the most well balanced game for beginners. And because the challenges are still entertaining, and you have to think through them. It's not a walk in the park.
Juke:Yeah, because there was some challenges that perf couldn't solve. And normally in a video game, I'm just like, I can't get this
Perf:to be honest, knots on my weakness, and there's a lot of knots. Knots ish.
Juke:No, there's no knots complicated, there's no bondage. There's no knives, but there is looping over things and stuff. That's bondage. But, um, yeah, and if you're a parent out there, and you're and you're listening to this podcast is because you're trying to understand your gamers at home. And, like, if you're looking to find a game that you could try to play with your kids to try to enter that world with them. This would be a great beginner game. Because if you if you make mistakes there, it doesn't really matter if you have to restart. You don't even you rarely have to restart an entire level you have just like many save points. Yeah. And they kind of have it automatically the checkpoints, right. So it's really not the end of the world. And then your kids can laugh I've made there was a mistake that I made where I ended up pushing a bucket over the edge like three times in a row making the same stupid mistake because I kept forgetting to jump. And at some point, I was crying laughing because I couldn't believe because I saw this that the first time I did this stupid mistake. I was like, Oh, that was a stupid mistake. And then I did it twice again. I was cry laughing because like, I couldn't comprehend how I made that mistake three times in a row. But it was a fun moment. And I think if you do have gamer kids at home and you're trying to enter that world, this is a fun little like, after supper game after your homework game that like we can do together before you know doing whatever you guys do in your daily routine.
Perf:Yeah, you need that game if you want to bring someone in gaming world and it's on the cheaper side like 10 bucks or something like that.
Juke:Yeah. And you have to buy once because then you sell on the couch together and you Right. So we play it on PC. Right? Is it on Xbox?
Perf:I haven't seen on which platform it's offered, but I'm pretty sure it's on Xbox too. I could just turn around and check real quick. But
Juke:I mean, you can Google it to you, you know? Yeah. People, you know that Google? Plus this is a podcast. So you can like listen and Google at the same time.
Perf:You ever question? Google it.
Juke:Yeah. But to be honest, I would say I suggest this game. There's a part there's a section in this game where you there's, there's like the main How do I explain this, there's like the main levels, like when you complete a level, then you can do level two. And then when you finished level two, level three is unlocked. But there's also a side section with many challenges, which are harder problems. Yeah, they were harder and harder and shorter. And we did like one, and we really didn't enjoy it that much. So I would say, and I think we accidentally ended up in that spot, because I clicked something that I wasn't supposed to. So I would say, definitely, if you're trying to get your beginner into a game, or whatever, or if you're a beginner, stick with the levels, the mini challenges, even though they're called mini challenges, they're not as fun as the levels but like, try everything out. If you if you want to try it out, try it out. But don't get discouraged if you try a mini challenge and get and you find it hard to levels are really much more fun and progressive. Yeah. Yeah, they were much more interesting. And it's fun to like, just jump around on stuff. You can really take your time. I really love
Perf:it. Yeah, we had fun, and we're gonna still have some more. Yeah, we're not done yet. Knowing that. And I know there's an second game, which is similar. But on let's say less cuter, more. Real side, if you like, more prison breaks type of thing. We have the game which is called A way out.
Juke:Okay, but that's not. I wouldn't necessarily say that. That's a beginner game. Like it's a split screen. It's like separate puzzle solving and then coming together and then separate.
Perf:I think it's, it's splitscreen. But it's a puzzle solving together. Okay. It's still it's still the same concept, but with a different set up. If I can say,
Juke:Yeah, I think that I think definitely the way that that sounds we haven't played it together yet. But it definitely sounds more as an interesting Co Op game, then a go to beginner game.
Perf:Yeah, let's say right after when you're done and unraveled using a with a way out?
Juke:Maybe I don't know. Because to be honest, I haven't been that interested in trying a way out and I'm sure once we try on my I might enjoy it. But every time you show me the trailer, I'm never like, Oh, cool. Let's play this, you know? So I, as a beginner have nothing to say because I haven't tried it. But it doesn't look like the most beginner friendly game necessarily.
Perf:No, but it's another one of these rare couch Co Op game.
Juke:Oh, it's also got two that's not... interesting. You can't play separately but a split screen. So why couldn't you play separately?
Perf:Good question, but I don't think I don't think you can or if you can, you both need to buy one version. A copy of it.
Juke:I don't understand co-op games that can't be played like online.
Perf:It's only the the way it's been programmed.
Juke:So work definitely. As we discover more games together. We'll be making episodes about game suggestions for beginners, but also eventually just episodes that are explaining some more complex games just for the parents and partners out there to be able to understand what their gamers are playing like, I'm sure Resident Evil is going to be one of those where we kind of just sit down one day and talk about a bit of the story behind Resident Evil just so that you can go home talk to your gamer and act like you know what you're talking about. And then like impress them and then maybe I don't know get some flowers out of it. I don't know. But yeah, I think that's all we have for now. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode. This is also going to be Ooh, this is gonna be pretty short episode. But I guess that's what our vibe is today.
Perf:trying you know
Juke:if you have any suggestions for beginner games, especially Co Op beginner games, because I think those are the best games for gamers to get their noobs into gaming.
